for this one I am thinking a lot about having objects "on tap". so the idea of having a multitude of brightly colored plastic forms pumps me up because can they be used to make a painting on a wall in space? or just make a painting in space? so can pieces I make, or setups be contingent on the objects I have in my "bank" of objects? I'm also interested in the distance mold making gives me from the objects- like can they become consumable or commercial in appearance but also have my hand in them...and if they are distanced from my hand and have that commercial vibe does that make them liberating or able to be rearranged by someone besides myself- someone who feels like if they re arrange them then they will have ownership. When i write this post I am thinking more of the upright objects I've prepped...which is a super simple foam form I made a while back in the shop in like five seconds, but I like the way it kind of grooves off the wall...what could a bunch of these do in a variety of colors on a wall? could they make a painting, I guess that's contingent upon the fact of the molds?
The jar object I again am thinking of the exciting way I can get multiples of a form in any color I want. So the jar like form is recognizable but what if there were several inset into a wood structure (for instance...not sure) that had custom wholes for each jar so that the bottoms stuck out a few inches and had a uniform color - could these utilitarian objects become something more through mold making and make a nice meeting of color and form. I think this gets me excited because figuring out ways of making satisfying interactions of color and form more than just the traditional ways that a "painter's painter" would- I think that process I described above feels like a more dynamic, exciting way to create a moment for me than something else...this is a ramble but this is a way I can think mold making can allow me to make an image in space- so my image making could be contingent on the multiple casts I take?
Long story short I want a bank of objects- colors and forms to expand my vocabulary as a maker and allow me to blow paintings up, create little interactions and give objects autonomy and personality but also force them to need each contingent
This blog is for Penn State's Spring 2017 ART 497 004 use. On this blog, students are expected to upload in-progress images of course work and assignments. This blog is an integral part of the class as it has many links to tutorials, crit project prompts and applications/information relating to flexible mold making and casting applications.
